Once upon a time, an angel and a devil fell in love and dared to imagine a world free of bloodshed and war.
This is not that world.
Art student and monster’s apprentice Karou finally has the answers she has always sought. She knows who she is—and what she is. But with this knowledge comes another truth she would give anything to undo: She loved the enemy and he betrayed her, and a world suffered for it.
In this stunning sequel to the highly acclaimed Daughter of Smoke & Bone, Karou must decide how far she’ll go to avenge her people. Filled with heartbreak and beauty, secrets and impossible choices, Days of Blood & Starlight finds Karou and Akiva on opposing sides as an age-old war stirs back to life.
While Karou and her allies build a monstrous army in a land of dust and starlight, Akiva wages a different sort of battle: a battle for redemption. For hope.
But can any hope be salvaged from the ashes of their broken dream?
I LOVED Daughter of Smoke and Bone so I was so, so excited to read the sequel! Daughter of Smoke and Bone is one of my all-time favorite books ever and Days of Blood and Starlight is now up on top with its predecessor. This series just keeps getting better . . Even if I need to wait until 2014 to get the third book. I’d rather not think about the wait but that just leaves plenty of time for rereading, doesn’t it?
Days of Blood and Starlight alternates between several different points of view so that we are able to see everything that is happening, just like in the first book. Typically I don’t like this kind of jumping around but it made me even more excited to read each section. There was never a part that I wanted to skip over to see what the outcome of a certain portion would be because I was invested in all of the characters. I love how they’re all complex, full of flaws, have so many problems thrust at them. There’s never a boring moment in this novel, which is probably why I finished it in two days!
The scenery in this book is just as gorgeously described and realized as in the first one. Even in the human world, there isn’t a normal, boring old setting. Everything has a mystical, otherworldly feel to it, which is particularly fitting as the series deals with angels and chimera interacting with the world as we know it.
There are so many twists and turns in this book that I immediately stopped trying to guess what might happen next. Neither side is perfect and neither side is entirely evil, either, which makes the entire plot even more complicated and lovely. Nothing is exactly how it seems in this series and that’s part of what makes it so wonderfully unique and addictive.
I could recommend this series to literally anyone and I know I’ll be singing its praises forever.
