Pitch, the Nightmare King, and his Fearlings had been soundly driven back by Nicholas St. North and company in the first Guardians’ adventure. But now Pitch has disappeared completely—and out of sight does NOT make for out of mind. It seems certain that he’s plotting a particularly nefarious revenge, and the Guardians suspect he might have gone underground. But how can they find him there?
Enter E. Aster Bunnymund, the only emissary of the fabled brotherhood of the Pookas—the league of philosophical warrior rabbits of imposing intellect and size. Highly skilled in martial arts (many of which he invented himself), Bunnymund is brilliant, logical, and a tunnel-digger extraordinaire. If the Guardians need paths near the Earth’s core, he’s their Pooka. He’s also armed with magnificent weapons of an oval-sort, and might just be able to help in the quest for the second piece of the Moonclipper.
This second book in The Guardians series is about much more than fixing a few rotten eggs—it brings the Guardians one step closer to defeating Pitch!
I got started on this book as soon as I finished with the first Guardian’s book! I knew that Bunnymund in the movie adaptation was far different than the one presented here so I was eager to see the changes and similarities. Pitch is still the ultimate villain in this book, returning to terrorize children and having a personal grudge against Nightlight. But he has several powerful forces working against him, coming together to bring about his downfall!
I still loved North in this book and especially how unenthusiastic he was about working with Bunnymund. Katherine was delightful to read about because she’s really just a young girl thrust into all of these fantastical journeys and facing the king of nightmares himself. The settings in this book don’t disappoint and are just as gripping at they were in book one. Now we get to see Pitch’s lair as well as Bunnymund’s home, where he creates the most delicious chocolate and doesn’t have any for himself. Why? He says that it’s bad for Pookas, but you’ll find out just what it does to them if you read this book!
I really, really can’t wait to read more of this series especially because the next book features the Tooth Fairy! Toothiana was my second favorite character (next to Jack Frost, of course) in the movie adaptation so I’m excited to read all about her!
I recommend this book to people of all ages. This lovely tale will tug at your imagination and have you remember just why you have to believe in these legends!
